When to Retrofit Weep Holes

Weep holes are supposed to relieve the water pressure building behind a wall. When they stop doing that, the practical answer is to retrofit weep holes rather than rebuild the structure. When they stop draining, that pressure has nowhere to go. Conventional weep holes clog as fine soil migrates into them, and from sediment, iron ochre, calcium deposits, and root intrusion. Many are simply crushed, grouted over, or were never filtered in the first place.

The consequences are well documented. University of Missouri research on maintainable drains points to wall drainage problems across the highway system, including a retaining wall failure on Interstate 70 in St. Charles, Missouri, and clogged weep holes on Old Highway 63 in Columbia, Missouri.

Signs a Wall Is Due for a Retrofit

Efflorescence or mineral staining streaking down the face of the wall.

Standing water or seepage that lingers at the base long after rain.

Bulging, leaning, or new cracking in the wall face.

Weep holes that stay dry during wet weather, a sign they are blocked rather than working.

Saturated soil behind the wall that never seems to drain down.

Why Retrofit Weep Holes from the Front Face

Choosing to retrofit weep holes from the exposed face is what makes the job practical. You restore drainage without excavating the retained soil, the new filter stays maintainable from the same face for the life of the structure, and the patented conical cartridge provides up to 2.7x the filtration surface area of a flat weep hole, which is what keeps it draining between cleanings.

The Sequence to Retrofit Weep Holes

This is the sequence used to retrofit weep holes on a failing structure during the Michigan DOT demonstration, including the adjustment that keeps saturated backfill from running out of the hole. Once a hole is cored, each unit seats and secures in about 30 seconds.

Six Steps, Working from the Face

Locate and center. Position the unit at the existing weep hole and center the core over the old hole where possible. Existing grout or rubber stoppers do not need to be removed first.

Core the hole. Mount the core drill and core through to the backfill. On a retrofit, a 4 inch bit is commonly centered over an existing 3 inch weep hole.

Manage saturated backfill. In saturated or liquefied sand, unscrew the core bit and pull the drill before backing the bit out, with the unit staged, so material does not pour from the hole.

Set the housing. Place the housing, with the filter cartridge inside, into the cored hole.

Pilot and fasten. Using the flange as a template, drill four 3/16 inch pilot holes, then drive the four 1/4 inch stainless steel concrete screws with an impact driver and finish by hand.

Seal and backfill. Confirm the flange gasket seats against smooth concrete. In drier conditions, fill voids around the cored hole with clean drainage stone.

Two field calls worth making: if the concrete below the old weep hole is abraded or deteriorated, offset the new drain left or right to smoother concrete so the gasket can seal. If a screw head shears while tightening, pull the unit, rotate the flange, and drill fresh pilot holes.

What You Do Not Have to Do

Most of the cost and disruption of conventional drainage repair comes from work you skip entirely when you retrofit weep holes from the face.

No back-side excavation. The retained soil stays in place. No digging, shoring, or dewatering behind the wall.

No removing old grout or stoppers first. The core drill goes straight through what is already in the hole.

No wall reconstruction. You are replacing a weep hole, not rebuilding the structure.

Maintenance After the Retrofit

Once you retrofit weep holes, maintenance is the easy part for the rest of the wall’s life. Pull the inner cartridge, check and clean or replace the filter fabric, and reseat it. No housing removal, no excavation, no special tools, and about 5 minutes per unit. Standard cartridge cleaning intervals are 3 to 5 years for the 3 inch unit, 4 to 7 years for the 4 inch unit, and 6 to 10 years for the 6 inch unit, and the 316L stainless steel housing carries a 100 plus year service life. Where iron mineral bacteria produce iron ochre, the Michigan DOT demonstration found it rinsed off the filters easily.
