DRAINAGE DESIGN CASE STUDY:
Wooden Bulkhead Drainage | Oak Island Marine Project NC
In Oak Island, North Carolina, a waterfront residential property underwent a marine drainage system upgrade to improve long-term protection against backfill erosion and hydrostatic pressure. The project featured the installation of JET Filter’s maintainable weep hole assemblies through newly installed reinforced timber bulkhead walls, providing critical water relief and soil stability along the shoreline.

Project Background
Timber bulkheads are commonly used in coastal regions for shoreline stabilization. However, without effective drainage, they often trap water behind the wall, leading to:
Hydrostatic pressure buildup
Soil saturation and migration
Accelerated wall failure
To prevent these risks, the project’s engineer and contractor team integrated a maintainable weep hole drainage solution built for marine environments.
Drainage Solution
As directed in the field, 20 JET Filter JF2.5ABS assemblies were installed along the new wooden bulkhead system, allowing for efficient drainage of water and filtration of backfill sediment.
✅ System Specs:
Units Installed: 20
Part #: JF2.5ABS
Type: 2.5” Open-End ABS Plastic Housing
Filter Media: Mirafi® Filter-Weave FW 300
Installed Through: Reinforced timber (treated wood) bulkhead face
This solution supports long-term maintenance, inspection, and effective erosion control—ideal for coastal residential properties.
Why Wooden Bulkhead Drainage Is Essential
Timber bulkheads—while effective for holding soil at the shoreline—require supplemental drainage to:
Prevent pressure damage
Reduce wall leaning or collapse
Minimize soil loss through gaps
JET Filter’s maintainable weep hole filters allow for continuous water relief and sediment filtration, while also offering access for future cleaning or flushing.
