DRAINAGE DESIGN CASE STUDY:
Fort Sill Concrete Retaining Wall Drainage | Weep Hole Extension Project
The Fort Sill drainage project located at the Fort Sill Substation in Lawton, Oklahoma, required drainage improvements that were made to the reinforced concrete retaining walls using JET Filter System’s maintainable weep hole technology. This project, completed by WMS R&B LLC under the direction of CDS Muery Engineering, aimed to relieve hydrostatic pressure and extend the wall’s performance with 42 stainless steel JET Filter weep hole drains.

Retaining Wall Drainage System Dilemma
Reinforced concrete retaining walls like those at Fort Sill’s Howitzer Trail are prone to hydrostatic pressure buildup and soil erosion without proper drainage integration. This often leads to wall deflection, cracking, or settlement—resulting in premature structural failure and costly repairs.
The need for a maintainable, long-lasting drainage solution was crucial for protecting the site’s infrastructure and ensuring operational stability at the substation.
Solution
The team installed 42 JF3SS maintainable weep hole assemblies, extending through proposed reinforced concrete barriers. These open-end retaining wall drainage systems improve drainage while offering easy access for long-term maintenance.
✅ 42 units of 3” diameter open-end ASTM 316/316L Stainless Steel Housing
✅ Mirafi® Filter-Weave FW 300 geotextile filter media
✅ Installed at strategic points along retaining structures
This retaining wall drainage system design ensures effective hydrostatic pressure relief, soil filtration, and long-term durability in the high-moisture environment surrounding the Fort Sill Substation Bank Extension.
Why Proper Drainage Matters for Concrete Retaining Walls
Without adequate transportation infrastructure drainage:
❌ Hydrostatic pressure builds up and threatens wall integrity
❌Soil migration weakens the base of the structure
❌ Water pooling leads to cracking and failure
❌ Maintenance becomes more frequent and costly
JET Filter’s maintainable weep hole drains allow access for inspection and flushing, ensuring reliable water relief, reduced erosion, and a longer structure lifespan.
