DRAINAGE DESIGN CASE STUDY:
Deland Residential Retaining Wall Drainage | Concrete Barrier Upgrade
At 1251 N. Stone Street in Deland, Florida, the SMA Men’s Residential facility partnered with A.M. Weigel Construction to improve water drainage performance behind new concrete retaining walls. The project included installing 50 JET Filter maintainable weep hole assemblies to reduce hydrostatic pressure and extend the lifespan of the facility’s landscape infrastructure

Residential Retaining Wall Drainage Challenge
Concrete retaining walls in residential environments—especially in landscaped areas—often suffer from poor drainage, resulting in:
Water pressure buildup
Soil erosion behind barriers
Cracking, bulging, or shifting of walls
Premature structural deterioration
This project aimed to mitigate these risks while protecting nearby walkways and landscaping elements surrounding the SMA facility.
Solution
To provide an accessible, low-maintenance solution, the team installed:
✅2.5” diameter open-end ABS housing
✅Geotextile Media: Mirafi® Filter-Weave FW 300
✅Designed for easy maintenance, sediment control, and pressure relief
The maintainable weep holes allow water to escape from behind concrete barriers while keeping soil and landscape material in place—ensuring long-term stability and protecting the property’s structural and aesthetic integrity.
Residential Retaining Wall Drainage - Why It Matters
In high-moisture states like Florida, residential retaining walls can quickly fail without proper drainage. This can result in:
Damaged hardscape or landscape investments
Frequent wall repairs or rebuilds
Water intrusion into nearby structures
Safety hazards on walking paths or patios
JET Filter’s maintainable weep holes provide a simple yet highly effective solution that keeps moisture levels manageable while ensuring soil remains securely behind the wall.
