DRAINAGE DESIGN CASE STUDY:

Montrose County Box Culvert Drainage | Carnation & 6000 Road Upgrade

Montrose County Public Works recently completed a box culvert and wingwall drainage improvement project at the intersection of Carnation Road and 6000 Road in Olathe, Colorado. The work included installing JET Filter’s closed-end stainless steel weep hole systems to improve drainage performance and protect the integrity of new reinforced concrete barriers.

Box Culvert Drainage System Challenge

Box culverts and concrete wingwalls are particularly susceptible to hydrostatic pressure, water pooling, and soil migration if proper drainage is not provided. At this rural Colorado site, seasonal runoff and saturated soils posed a serious long-term risk to the structural performance of the new concrete infrastructure.

Montrose County engineers sought a reliable solution that could prevent pressure buildup and extend the life of the culvert system with minimal maintenance.

Solution

Working with Buckhorn Engineering and Core & Main, the county installed 16 JET Filter JF4SSCVLV closed-end maintainable weep hole assemblies into the concrete wingwalls and barriers of the culvert system.

✅16 units of 4” diameter closed-end ASTM 316/316L Stainless Steel Housing

✅Geotextile Media: Mirafi® Filter-Weave FW 300

✅Maintainable Design: Allows future inspection and cleaning

These systems allow for controlled water discharge, while filtering out sediment and minimizing long-term erosion—ensuring durability for years to come.

Why Box Culvert Drainage Systems Matter

When culverts or wingwalls lack proper drainage:

  • Hydrostatic pressure builds, stressing the concrete

  • Soil migration causes settlement and undermines structures

  • Moisture retention accelerates deterioration

  • Repairs become frequent and costly

JET Filter’s closed-end maintainable weep hole systems provide an accessible, long-term solution—mitigating pressure, preserving structure, and reducing costs.
